Distracted driving causes more severe collisions, study claims

An auto accident takes most people by surprise. They go out in the morning believing that they're going to go about their day in the usual way, but they're blindsided when they're struck by another vehicle.

There are many causes of motor vehicle accidents, with distractions being one of the most common. Distractions are caused by many things ranging from eating behind the wheel or texting to talking to passengers.

When a driver is distracted, it takes only a few seconds for that distraction to cause a serious collision. Unfortunately, these collisions can lead to fatalities and serious injuries.

Studies have shown that distracted driving tends to cause more serious collisions than other types. Why? Drivers don't see the hazards ahead of them. They don't try to brake, swerve or avoid the collision in any way, and that means a crash at higher speeds and more dangerous angles.

The study performed by the Risk Institute at Ohio State University found that distracted driving increases the odds of severe injuries or deaths in a collision when compared with crashes of other types. This is particularly true in cases where the crash was a rear-end collision or happened on highways or in work zones.

At the end of the day, distracted driving kills and maims. It's something no one should be taking lightly. Unfortunately, some people don't realize the danger they're putting others in until it's too late. If that's the case in your crash, remember that those who cause auto accidents can be held accountable and should be so that they don't do it again.
